The downtown is the core, or “heart”, of a city; it tells the story of the community. The ongoing, remarkable transformation of our historic downtown by private developers and investors and their vision for the future allow us to “lean forward” into a new Martinsville.
Indiana Main Street programs help in implementing strategies to stimulate long-term economic growth and pride in our local communities. Martinsville’s Main Street program, Rediscover Martinsville, was instrumental in the early stages of the revitalization of our downtown but is currently going through a transition period. As they refocus their efforts, Rediscover Martinsville is seeking to get more folks engaged in the process. To assist in recruiting volunteers, Visit Morgan County (the county tourism office) and the Martinsville Chamber recently hosted a Main Street 101 presentation by Paul Smith, the West Central Community Liaison for the Office of Community & Rural Affairs.
The Main Street Approach helps communities leverage both the art and science of downtown revitalization to create a better quality of life for all. It encourages communities to take steps to enact long term change, while also implementing short term, inexpensive and placed-based activities that attract people to the commercial core and create a sense of enthusiasm and momentum about their community.
A special shout out to Michelle Keller for allowing us to meet in her beautiful new event space, Brickhouse on Main. Be sure to check it out on Facebook!
If you’d like to be part of the exciting transformation of our downtown, take a few minutes to check out the below PowerPoint presentation and audio recording of the Main St. 101 session. Rediscover Martinsville will next meet on Tuesday, August 13th, 6:30 pm at the Art Sanctuary and they welcome any and all guests.
