The 1976 time capsule buried on the courthouse lawn will be opened on July 4, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at the Jimmy Nash City Park in Martinsville, IN. If you have family or know of someone who is expecting to retrieve something an ancestor left for them, please attend.

If you cannot attend, items will be transported to the Morgan County History Center & Museum, 127 S. Main St., Martinsville, for later dispersal. We will be asking those who retrieve items to leave us their name and contact information in case you are representing someone outside of your immediate family. It is our understanding that there may be a list inside the vault of who deposited items.

If you have something that you would like to have placed in the 2076 time capsule, we will have envelopes available. It should fit inside a 10″x13″ or smaller envelope. The items cannot contain plastic, and if possible, written/typed items should be on archival-quality paper. These will be stored in archival boxes in an antique trunk, which will be locked until its opening on July 4, 2076. The trunk will be stored in the Morgan County History Center and Museum, with explicit instructions regarding its opening and contents attached to the locked trunk.
