MARTINSVILLE, IND. – With the recent opening of the new Morgan County Judicial Campus, the County is set to embark on a much-needed renovation of the courthouse and courthouse grounds. The Martinsville Chamber is working with the City of Martinsville, Morgan County, and Meyer Najem to provide timely updates on the progress of the courthouse renovation initiative, particularly when traffic flow around the square and parking availability are impacted.
The courthouse and the probation departments are currently moving out of their current spaces and into their new offices at the new Judicial Campus at 180 S. Main St. At the same time, Meyer Najem is preparing to close Jefferson St. on the square so that utility work can be completed. Please note: Sidewalks will remain open.
After approximately one month, Jefferson St. will reopen to southbound traffic, and angled parking will be available on the east side of the street. The parking spaces on the west side of Jefferson St. will remain closed to the public to provide a construction entrance for the duration of the project. As Jefferson Street reopens to traffic, the one block of Morgan Street on the square will be one-way west, Main Street will be one-way south, and Washington Street on the square will be one-way east. Although the signage being placed says, “Closed on or after July 17,” please note that other than the short-term closure of Jefferson as described above, streets will not be closed to traffic. Morgan, Main, and Washington will NOT be closed, but will be one-way from mid-August until mid to late November.
Sidewalks will remain accessible, and parking will still be available in front of the businesses during this time. However, we respectfully request that business owners and their staff park off the square during construction. This allows more parking for customers. Subcontractors have also agreed to park in designated lots off the square.
The exterior renovation includes reconfigured parking, new sidewalks, and ADA-compliant ramps and curbs. Once interior renovations are complete, the courthouse will provide office space for professionals who have been working in the Morgan County Administration Building at 180 S. Main St.
The contractors expect to finish the street work before Small Business Saturday, so that the two-way traffic flow and parking can reopen on Morgan, Main, and Washington streets.
Thank you for your support of downtown Martinsville and the continuing improvements being made. Stay tuned for updates as the project progresses.
