Martinsville, IN – As Morgan County moves forward with much-needed renovations of the historic courthouse and grounds, there will be some temporary changes to the traffic flow and parking around the square from late July through mid-to-late November. The exterior renovations will result in reconfigured parking, new sidewalks, and ADA-compliant ramps and curbs.

Jefferson St. on the square has been closed so utility work can be completed. While the storm utilities are being tied in at the North end of Jefferson Street, access to the sidewalk will be from the South end. After that work is completed, contractors will then do the same at the south end of Jefferson, with the sidewalk being accessible from the north end of the street. Jefferson Street businesses will be accessible during this time.
After approximately one month, Jefferson St. will reopen to southbound traffic, and angled parking will be available on the east side of the street. The parking spaces on the west side of Jefferson St. will remain closed to the public to provide a construction entrance for the duration of the project.
Although the current signage states “Closed on or after July 17,” streets will not be closed to traffic, except for the short-term closure of Jefferson as described above. As Jefferson Street reopens, the one block of Morgan Street on the square will be one-way west, Main Street will be one-way south, and Washington Street on the square will be one-way east through November.
Sidewalks will remain accessible, and parking will still be available in front of the businesses during this time. Downtown concerts and special events will continue throughout summer and fall, and nearby public parking lots make it easy for shoppers and diners to keep enjoying their favorite local spots.
Downtown Martinsville businesses are worth the walk!
The Martinsville Chamber, Visit Morgan County, and the City of Martinsville have partnered to launch the Worth the Walk initiative to encourage residents and visitors to support downtown businesses during the few months when traffic flow and parking will be disrupted.
The “Worth the Walk” campaign aims to inspire residents to rediscover the charm, quality, and community spirit that local businesses bring to their downtown. Launching on August 1st, the campaign celebrates the unique offerings of our small businesses and encourages shoppers to show a little extra love to downtown shops and restaurants during the construction around the courthouse.
Featuring weekly drawings beginning in August and culminating in a $500 grand prize drawing the week after Small Business Saturday, the initiative celebrates the resilience and charm of the beautiful historic downtown.
With every purchase made at a participating business, a ripple effect supports local jobs, strengthens the local economy, and helps sustain the character of the area. “Small businesses are the backbone of our community,” said Mayor Kenny Costin. “By choosing local, you’re not just making a purchase—you’re investing in your neighbors, your friends, and the heartbeat of your community.”

Residents and visitors can participate in the “Worth the Walk” campaign by simply visiting downtown shops and restaurants. Pick up a passport at a participating business and collect the stamps from five different businesses to be entered into the weekly and grand prize drawings. When you fill in one card, grab another and keep shopping! Submit all completed passports to a participating business on or before Small Business Saturday, November 29th, to be eligible for the grand prize drawing.
“This campaign encourages people to explore hidden gems, connect with our small business owners, and share their experiences using the hashtag #WorthTheWalk on social media,” said Jamie Taylor, president of the Martinsville Chamber.
